How to run the beep test

1 Mark two lines exactly 20 metres apart on a flat, clear and non-slip surface.

2 Start behind one line and reach the opposite line at each signal before turning.

3 Continue as the time between signals gets shorter and the required pace increases.

4 Select End Test when the runner can no longer maintain the required pace.

Safety: This is a demanding exercise test. Warm up properly and stop for pain, dizziness, unusual breathlessness or any other concerning symptom. Use the scoring and stopping rules required by your school, employer, sport or assessment organisation.

Free online 20m beep test timer

This browser-based beep test timer guides a runner between two lines positioned 20 metres apart. It displays the current level, shuttle number, target speed, time to the next signal and an animated direction guide.

No account or installation is required. The test runs directly in the browser and works on desktop computers, tablets and modern phones.

Track levels, shuttles and final score

Each completed shuttle moves the test forward. When a level is complete, the pace increases automatically. Ending the test records the last completed level and shuttle, approximate distance covered and elapsed test time.

Different organisations may apply different missed-line and scoring rules, so use this timer as a pacing tool and follow the rules supplied for your assessment.

Using the timer for training

The timer can support sports conditioning, school fitness sessions and practice before a formal shuttle-run assessment. Set up the full course before pressing Start Test and make sure the audio can be heard clearly at both ends.

Audio and display controls

Sound can be turned on or off, the timer can enter fullscreen mode, and the display finish can be changed without affecting the running test. Keyboard shortcuts are available for fast control from a laptop.

Beep test questions

How far apart should the lines be?

Choose the required protocol before starting. The recognised standard uses 20 metres; a 15 metre version is also provided for organisations that use a shorter course.

Does the timer save my result?

The final result remains visible on the page until the test is reset or the page is reloaded. It is not uploaded or stored in an account.

Can I use it on a phone?

Yes. The dashboard and advertisement position resize for mobile screens. Keep the phone somewhere safe and loud enough to hear.
